I was confused when I read across Emerson's words, "I shun father and mother and wife and brother, when my genius calls me. I would write on the lintels of the door-post,
Whim. I hope it is somewhat better than whim at last, but we cannot spend the day in explanation(22)." Through processing and feedback from others I interpreted, in order for Emerson to not conform to others thoughts or beliefs, he ignores those around him in order for his ideas to be his own and not influenced by others; he "shuns" others.
I believe that the reason Emerson "shuns" people when he feels the need to work, is that he wants something to be done. The whole point of his essay is that people need to do things for themselves, so he has to put other things aside in order to do what needs to be done.
